Rare Soul UK - The Roots

Posted on May 5, 2010 at 0:13 0 Comments

Blues and Soul magazine, which finally closed a couple of years ago, was in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s 'The Bible' for any self respecting Soul fan. The music - apart from the poppy material - rarely troubled the charts and the BBC rarely acknowledged it as a genre at all.

B & S featured some very capable writers including John Abbey (the editor) and Bob Killbourn but one above all others was regarded as 'the guru'. He was Dave Godin.

The Tragic Death of Tammi Terrell

Posted on March 22, 2010 at 2:03 2 Comments

I was amazed to find that this week marks the sad anniversary of the passing of Tammi Terrell some 40 years ago.

Her music has never disappeared of course but it seems there is renewed interest in the lady with many of her tracks - and new remixes - being very welcome inclusions on the playlists of many DJs, particularly on the Northern Soul scene where her iconic voice and image continues to be revered.

Our heads soon a-buzzing, singing tunes we shall hear.

Past sleepy towns, pubs closing for the night

Their punters are pissed and ready to fight

We smile at these mortals,

Our eyes wide as portals.

As their… Continue

SEARCHING FOR SOUL

Reg Stickings is one remarkable guy.

If you've ever met this ebullient character, you can't help being charmed by the little fellow. He exudes a joy in life which is totally inspired by his love and devotion for Soul Music.

It is his very reason for being and like many of us who share his passion, he knows he is 'blessed' for having been able to indulge his passion and share his experiences with his fellow travellers in Soul. For Reg though, that was not enough. For the… Continue

BEST SOUL RADIO

Posted on June 20, 2009 at 19:00 4 Comments

Really good Soul shows on the radio are at a premium but they are out there.

If you know of any that would be worth featuring, please post the link so the rest of the Family can be made aware of them.

I'll start the ball rolling by fearuring Mary Fox's excellent Motown & Northern Soul show on BBC Radio Stoke. It has been running for several years and thanks to the wonders of t'internet, it attracts a worldwide audience now. I'm sure many of them are fascinated by the… Continue
