Max's (Southeast) Soul Event News Reviews April 2017

April known for it's showers so better have your galoshes and umbrellas at the ready when going to any of these Soul Events: Too Darn Soulful, Upbeat @ The Palace, The White Swan, Soul Kitchen, Soulful Saturday, Voodoo Vault, Too Darn Soulful, Funky Town, Turnin' my Heartbeat up.

April 7th Too Darn Soulful, The Funky Fish, 19-23, Marine Parade, BN2 1TL, Brighton.

A busy month for Paddy, he starts with this little nugget, his guest DJ's are: Iain Stuart and Colin Slater. The night goes from 9pm till 2am, it's £6 for members and £10 non member's. If you buy ticket's in advance you get a 2 for 1 discount, a real bargain, looks like it's going to be a “Real Humdinger” Ric-a-Tic-Tic, for more info Tel: 08456783340.

April 8th Upbeat @ The Palace, 37 White Rock, America Ground, TN34 1JL, Hastings, starting time 8.30pm to 1.30 am. The DJ's you can expect to hear on the decks are: Ms Madam Scorcher an aficionado on rare Female Ska & Reggae etc, Darren Bennett, Jimmy Kent and event organizer Roy Williamson. They will be spinning 60's Soul, early Reggae, Rocksteady, Ska, and R&B & Soul floor fillers, “Honest to goodness” there's nothing else to say about the Palace.

April 9th The White Swan, 16 Chichester Rd, BN18 0AD Arundel, West Sussex. You need to get there for 4pm to 8pm and it's free, don't you know. Tony & Di Cassini run this little get-together. Tony will DJ with Nic Dunnaway and Paddy Shevlin. with across the board tuneage.

No need taking any talc cos' it's not allowed and no need to be “standing on guard” either as it's a relaxed kinda afternoon.

April 16th Brighton Beach Party, Pryzm, West Street, BN1 2RE, a Bill Griffin, Grant Fisher and David Lynn production. This Sunday All- Dayer returns to the New York Disco Room for the 6th time on Easter Bank Holiday Sunday. You can expect to hear: Soul, Jazz Funk, Soulful House, RNB. DJ's on the day: Jeff Young, Brian Jay, Terry Jones, Eddie Piller, Bob Jones, Gavin Page, Paul Brighton Clark, Grumpy Brown, Dave Lyn, Bill & Grant, Terry Matthews, Mick Foster, Gilo. April 21st Soul Kitchen, Tunbridge Well's @ the Grey Lady, 70-72 the Pantiles, TN2 5TN. Essential to get there for 7pm to 1am. It's only £5 to get in and hear some of the best mid pace tunes in the country, provided by Mr John Brown esq, and the delectable Tracey Shaw, along with their guest DJ's: Mark Taylor, Anthony Sweeney and Danny North who will be coming South. The Kitchen is a select bijou venue playing a select collection of Soul sounds from the 60's and 70's, “my heart's beatin's stronger” just thinking about it.

April 22 Soulful Saturday @ the Vittle & Swig, 26/28 Camden Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2PT, 8pm to 1am, £5 entrance. The Vittle & Swig plays on this occasion: 70's Funky Soul and Disco. Host Simon Penfold will DJ along with: Lee Pacey and Ian Sterling, so come on boy's “Let's get it on” and “Make it Funky”

April 28th The Voodoo Vault, The Cellar @ The Brunswick Pub, Holland Rd, Hove, BN3 1JF with Little Rik Taub and Wee Marky Anderson, they will be playing rockabilly, Rockin' Blues, Rhythm and Soul.

I suggest “If you've got no particular place to go” this will be right up your “Ding-a-ling”.

April 29th “Turnin' my Heartbeat up” The Place, Arundel Football Club, Mill Road BN18 9PA. Res DJ's:Tony Casini & Soulie Simon plus guest's will be spinning up-tempo Northern-Soul-Motown for this little Turkish delight. You need to be there on the dot of 8pm to midnight. They will charge you £3 so you can get out on to the dance floor. My advice to you ladies is “Put on your Soulful Dress” you guy's if you haven't got one of those, you need to go “Shopping for Clothes”

April 29th Funky Town @ The View, Western Esplanade, Kingsway, Hove, free before 10pm or £6 after. Paul Clark is the main sugar shaker, his guest DJ's: Adey, Richard Goodliff and Dug Chant will start spinning Soul Classics, Funk and Disco @ 9.30 pm to 2am. Now peeps nothing much happens in Hove actually, I know, but when it does, no need to “stop and think”, just go.

April 31st Too Darn Soulful, The Funky Fish, 19-23, Marine Parade, BN2 1TL, Brighton. Paddy Shevlin (told you he's been busy) has his 3rd Spring Bank Holiday, Northern Soul All- Dayer. His guest DJ's are: Tony Ellis (How to do Northern Soul Properly) plus Linda Seddon, Jok Evans, Nicki Shaw, Andy Crane, Alfie Linney and Richard Berry. You'd better get on “The right track”, hopefully see you there.

Serious business: 08456783340 £10/£7 members.

Do the right thing and get on down to any of the above. As I've said before this is not all you will find, for more, just look on Facebook's Event's, that's great for finding out about Soul night's in your area, and there's Soul Source  and The Soul Survivors Family of course.
